These books are mentor texts which I use to frame the reading instructional skills each week. I read each book several times to my students through the week. Each day we discuss the book and build community by discovering things about ourselves while reading and discussing these books. Having these texts in the classroom will enable my students to access and read these mentor texts at anytime. Mentor texts help build better readers and writers. Students are exposed to each of these texts for a week. We examine theme, tone, mood, writing style, grammar, and illustrations. During our group discussions students make connections to themselves, other books, as well as global connections.
