For decades, the traditional classroom has been organized in a face-forward orientation, with students observing and absorbing the teacher's directions. However, times have changed and the pedagogy continues to be challenged and best practices shift to increase student responsibility and control for their own learning. We are eager to offer more seat choices to our students as a way to increase their engagement with the curriculum, and create comfort within our classroom. Seat choice is a small but powerful opportunity for students to gain a sense of self and control in the classroom community.
This project seeks to increase flexible spaces within our classroom as a way for students to access the curriculum, as well as to give teachers more spaces to meet with struggling learners.
We want to see our classroom become a welcoming place for learners. Flexible seating does not just mean the seats a student is sitting in. It also connects to the environment of the class. We will offer options in lighting as well to help keep a calm atmosphere in the room. Students will feel calm when they enter the classroom and also have a chance to choose ‘their best place’ to work with teachers coming to them in those spaces.
This project will further our work with social-emotional learning in the classroom as well as meet the needs of our diverse population of scholars. Through onboarding this project, we hope to instill a sense of community through student choice.
