Our school library receives no money for new books each year. Because of this, our collection is seriously lacking culturally relevant and high interest materials. Middle school children today want their stories to be just as interesting as what they are watching on Netflix - Sweet Valley High no longer cuts it. If we want our children to be life-long readers and support their early literacy then we have to provide them with materials that they find interesting. Neil Gaiman's books will speak to the children in a way that will keep them coming back for more stories - thus creating a library that is relevant and vested in their lives.
