Funding for relaxation projects such as customized meditation pillows and collages will give my students the opportunity to create long-lasting stress reduction tools. These are hands on projects that will both allow my students to express themselves artistically and center themselves throughout the year during our advisory mindfulness time. With many students still struggling with the after-effects of trauma experienced before, during, and after the immigration process these tactile relaxation tools will support feelings of calm and focus. Studies have shown the incredible impact that mindfulness can have on the brain at all ages, and especially for young people. Research has shown that regular mindfulness supports increased compassion (for self and others), improved attention, emotional self-regulation and reduction in anxiety. Each student in my advisory will get to make their own small pillow out of felt, personalizing it with thread and sequins. I will store these pillows in my classroom, where students will get to use them during our regular mindfulness practice in advisory class. A soft object can be very comforting to students during this reflective time, either to rest their head on or hold in their hands. We will also be making collages in their mindfulness journals (calm space, gratitude, future goals, etc) to reinforce positive emotional experiences and give students space to write reflections about their experiences. At the end of the year students will get to take their pillows and journals home as a reminder of the work they have done throughout the year, and to support their practice moving forward. I will also develop curriculum for these projects to share, along with materials, with other teachers on my team, meaning these projects will have an impact for years to come. Thank you for your support!
