As the newcomer reading intervention teacher for all the 12th graders at OIHS, I want to promote a love of reading and develop reading habits and literacy for all of my students regardless of their reading level. Reading can be challenging because either the books are meant for very young children or they are simply designed to engage students who are not like them. In order to support literacy at all levels for newcomers, I have chosen books that are low lexiled but high-interest, culturally relevant, more age-appropriate, and are to be read and discussed together in book club style groups. Fighting illiteracy will take more than one reading intervention teacher; it will take interesting books, classmates, families, and generous donors like you who are all united in forever altering the trajectory of the lives of our newest Americans.
