All students want to feel safe and comfortable in their learning environment. For students with sensory processing difficulties, autism, or anxiety, it’s hard to focus on your teacher when you’re trying to hold your body and brain together. Sensory tools help students regulate their bodies, allowing their brains to access academics and the environment. When students are provided with the right tools, like pressure vests and fidget tools, amazing things happen. They no longer feel the need to roll on the floor, hide under tables or chew on their shirts. Every child wants to learn and play with their peers. Many times, students need to be removed from their general education classroom to re-regulate. This means missed instructional time, and fun. By providing each child with the tools right in their own classroom, we can reduce the amount of time needed out of the classroom, allowing for greater access to instruction, and fun like recess. It will also teach them positive coping skills and self-advocacy skills as they will be able to ask for and recognize what they need to help control their feelings. This in turn will give them confidence that they can control their sensory needs, which means less meltdowns, and a better self-image. Please help give me every chance I can for my students to have access to inclusion, and to help them feel safe and at ease in the same classroom as their typically developing peers.
