Teenagers today are struggling with stress and anxiety that surpasses anything of past generations. Sadly, schools do not provide the opportunities for supporting students with this prevalent issue because they simply don't have the money or staff to support the students. In AVID, we prepare students for acceptance to university, but we also know how incredibly important their mental health is to success once they leave for college. I shared excerpts from the book, The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World, with my students and they unanimously asked if we could read the book as a class. We also study cultures and leaders from around the world, so this book also illustrates two strong leaders who have enacted change in the lives of millions of people in the world. So, while inspiring them with ways to de-stress and find joy in this chaotic world, they will also be able to see how it is the little things that people do that can make all of the difference in the world, and how people from different cultures and backgrounds have so much to offer each other.
