These new books will draw students to read them. They will make them laugh, trigger memories and teach them historical events all while they are developing a love for reading. Reading becomes less of a chore and more of an adventure. Training children to become habit readers requires committing to reading a book everyday of the school year. My students reading goals are 40 novels in a school year, in addition to a picture book every day. Reading is the life skill that every job, and life, requires! It is the foundation for every other subject taught. Developing good readers does not happen spontaneously it requires stimulating materials and a teacher who loves reading. Being able to offer this to students can and will curve the dropping reading levels of students.
