After a year of hybrid learning, the return to a high school classroom may be challenging for some students. To best prepare our students’ transition to in-person learning, our school recently certified me and other educators in mindfulness training. I am excited to incorporate the breathing and movement skills into daily lessons and make this wellness initiative a habit for me and my ESL students. Learning how to be mindful improves stress, sleep, and relationships resulting in academic success and self-regulation. My plan is to create a peaceful educational environment throughout the entire classroom so students feel safe and are supported in all aspects of their development. With the help of a few resources such as yoga asana cards, mindfulness challenges, and an emotions flip book, my ESL students will learn necessary vocabulary so they can become aware of body parts, feelings, and actions. They will be encouraged to honor themselves as they persevere through guided imagery, yoga sequences, and mindfulness-based art exercises. Additionally, I would appreciate the opportunity to design a private “mindful moment” area within the classroom that is separated by a room divider decorated with Van Gogh’s artwork. There would be comfortable seating, a small rug, and potted plants to bring nature indoors. One student at a time could relax their mind and use a sand timer to take deep breaths. There would be many ways to practice self-care through the use of sensory therapy gadgets, mandala coloring pages, and serene photographs.
