When students are simply provided with a concept, they rarely learn. Rather it is when students are engaged with the material and are able to interact with these concepts that meaningful knowledge is created. Students, particularly those in lower elementary, need objects and tools to help them make sense of abstract concepts. These materials will help improve mastery of math concepts. During each math lesson, students should be provided with manipulatives before and during the introduction of abstract math concepts and more increasingly challenging work. Students, for example, might have difficulty understanding large numbers or base ten, if simply lectured about them. An abacus provides ways for them to make sense of these concepts, by allowing students to create a physical representation of these concepts, and by allowing them to explore these concepts before being provided a formal introduction. This provides the students with the tools required for mastery once that introduction is made. Sometimes concepts seem fairly straightforward to adults, yet these concepts can be difficult to explain to children. With the clocks set, students will be able to see how a change in the minute hand affects the hour hand. They will also be able to show mastery of the concept using these manipulatives. Virtually every lesson going forward, will use at least one of these manipulatives to help students master common core standards. These basic tools will enable my students to better master 2nd-grade concepts, and will carry with them to higher math.
