Stand up desks have been proven to increase student focus and achievement through research and case studies. Stand up desks allow students to be comfortable and still get work done. Companies such as Google and Apple are making versatile work spaces available because they increase productivity and employee satisfaction. Stand up desks are just the beginning of providing students with the space they need to learn. If you have ever fidgeted through a long meeting, you will know what I mean. Middle school children need to move. The requested stand up desks will allow my students the freedom to exercise their muscles which increases blood flow to the brain. When blood flows to the brain, learning and focus increases. It is not necessary to sit still to learn. In fact, studies have shown that some children can only learn if they are moving. The stand up desk with the swinging footrest allows students to pump their legs, shift right or left, lean forward, stretch, and move. In other words, they can fidget without disturbing the learning of others. This increased time on task will positively impact memory, recall, retention, cognitive processing, and productivity. This desk will help fill their need to move and allow them to concentrate on learning math.
