Having highback beanbag chairs in our classroom will serve many useful purposes. My biggest hope is that students will learn to enjoy reading in a relaxed environment. I want my students to not only enter my classroom with a desire to learn reading skills necessary to pass a test, but also with an eagerness to sink into a comfy chair and escape through the pages of a great book. The new chairs will replace old beanbag chairs that I've accumulated over the past 10 years. My current chairs were given to me from teachers and our school librarian. The chairs were already in rough shape and on their way to the dumpster. They have split open so many times and lost so much filling. I've used duct tape and gorilla tape to try to salvage our old beanbag chairs because even in horrible condition, my students still beg to sit in a beanbag to read.
With your support, my students may enjoy the feeling of cuddling up with a great book in our cozy beanbag chairs! For the first time ever, my students look forward to opening a book to read. The new beanbag chairs will be used by students throughout the day as incentives for reading! Each day, I allow my students at least 10 minutes of individual or partner reading time to enjoy a book! I use this time to meet with individual students to help select books, listen to students read, work on individual reading skills, and discuss reading selections. I truly want my students to love reading and I know these beanbag chairs will make a difference!
