The 3D printing technology single-handedly represents an outstanding teaching opportunity, with clear links to many important math and science fields, including: computer programming and design (development of 3D computer images), manufacturing (production of real-life engineering models and prototypes), thermodynamics (temperature, phase change—solid to liquid), robotics (position and velocity control of programmable extruder (printing nozzle)), mathematics (basic 3D shapes, assembly of shapes, volume, total mass…), electronics (circuits), process control (integration of software and hardware to produce a prototype right in front of the students). Many of these students come from minority, disadvantaged households. The 3D printer will provide a unique opportunity to infuse a desire in our students to seek careers in science and technology. Students simply cannot satisfy their desire to learn more about this enchanting technology, with near-instantaneous gratification as prototypes are 3D printed right before their astonished eyes. It is truly a mesmerizing experience, with students focused on learning leading-edge technologies while having lots of excitement!
