Picasso once said, "Every child is an artist, the problem is to remain an artist once they grow up." Imagine a world without art, sad, huh? That is something I would never want for you, myself, OR my students and that is why I started our after-school art club. What I thought might be a few kids for session one turned into sixty 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders. Session two begins next week and we have over forty students signed up with a waiting list a mile long. I have doubled my teacher support so we can accept more kids, and we are now finalizing plans to hold at least two more sessions before the end of this school year. Please don't get me wrong, our students are lucky. They have loving teachers, a supportive administration and the best support staff around. They go to a nice school and have their own iPads or laptops depending on their grade. I do not want to sound ungrateful. I love teaching at a 1:1 school that uses blended learning efficiently and effectively, I just want to make sure our students are given every opportunity to express themselves creatively without the parameters - and support - of technology. We have paint, construction paper, scissors, brushes and glue, but in order to meet the needs of our rapidly growing club we need markers and textured rubbing plates. Markers are versatile, but they can dry up quickly. Instead of throwing them out, we re-use dried markers to make unique watercolors in an array of colors. Textured rubbing plates will be used for individual projects, for art club early finisher centers, and during future weather-related indoor recesses. These supplies will make a difference supporting creativity while fostering new ideas and growth. Thanks for your consideration.
