Students will be using these kitchen materials to learn how to independently navigate the kitchen and prepare food for themselves. These kitchen materials will greatly aid in fostering independent living education. Cooking not only increases the student's knowledge of independence but also works on basic math and functional skills. Students are able to better identify fractions and measurements as well as following the necessary steps in a recipe. These are basic life skills that will aid them in all areas of their futures.
Your donation will greatly assist the education of independent living skills for young adults with intellectual disabilities. These are skills that will improve their school lives and prepare them for an independent future.
The measurement items will help students work on basic skills and fraction identification. Plates and utensils will assist in working on gross motor skills whilst eating as well as functional life skills of properly setting a table. Pots, pans, and baking sheets will allow the students to learn how to cook and follow recipe instructions while using an oven and/or stove top rather than being limited to a microwave. Pot holders and knives will help facilitate learning on kitchen safety. These are skills that we will work on in the classroom and then help students generalize and use at home or into a job setting.
