I once read a quote in college that said, 'I stuck my finger in the whole of existence and it smelled of nothingness.' And I thought to myself, ' Wow, It smelled of nothingness. Not of experiences, hopes, dreams, but nothingness?' And I thought to myself that that has to be the saddest life anyone could live. I did not think about this quote again until I started teaching. I realized that sometimes my amazing students did not believe that they were amazing. They stuck their finger into the whole of existence and smell nothingness. I could not live with that and it has compelled me to act. So I write grants on Donorschoose because it is amazing what a new rug, or listening center, or that great Diary of a Wimpy Kid book can do for a child. Donors make it possible for students to stick their finger into the whole of existence and smell nothing but the sweet aroma of possibilities. And that is worth its weight in gold.
