This behavior management technique using simple little erasers, a few accessories to earn and a pet habitat to create, develops our students social emotional needs without them even knowing they are learning. The project begins with each student adopting a desk pet (a small animal shaped eraser) and developing their pet's habitat (a small container to keep on their desk). The biggest highlight of the project is when the students earn incentives in the form of accessories for their pets. Accessories are small erasers as well, however these are the fun things the pets enjoy like food, sports equipment and seasonal items. This is more than a sticker chart! Students love earning accessories for their pets! It will support the Pillar of excellence in developing the social emotional learning of our students. The O'Connor Desk Pet Project isn't just for behavior management, Desk Pets in the classroom are also used to support academic skills by providing opportunities for research, creative writing, money management, and literacy development.
