Have you ever heard of first grade students coding robots to carry out a specific set of instructions to complete a designated task? I was very intrigued this summer when I was introduced to Code.org at an in-service training offered at my school. It was an eye opening experience for me and my colleagues! I was engrossed in this wonderful world of teaching students to code! I was amazed by the opportunities students will have if we give them the tools necessary to be 21st century learners and thinkers! Part of this experience starts at a very young age and helping students embrace their critical thinking and problem solving abilities! A simple robot called a Bee-Bot can help these students! A Bee-Bot is a robot that students can program to carry out a specific set of instructions; also known as a code. This Bee-Bot Starter Kit and additional Bee-Bots will allow my students to practice and hone in on the skills needed to exercise their critical thinking, problem solving, and coding skills in an age appropriate manner; while practicing their math skills, reading skills, spelling skills, etc. For example, we can set up the learning mat with letters that students can code the Bee-Bot to stop on the letters that spell our spelling words. I will also be able to give them a definition or CVC word and they will have to code the Bee-Bot to stop on the word that matches the definition or CVC word. Practicing math facts can be fun, too! I can throw out a math problem and the Bee-Bop will be coded to stop on the number that correctly answers the problem. There are so many opportunities to integrate this Bee-Bot across the curriculum. I am excited to get this project started ASAP! :)
