Music is the universal language of mankind! My 5th and 6th grade band students learn this new language in class 2 times each week.
I have never turned a student away from band because of instrument funding, and I never will.
90% of my band students play school owned instruments because their families can not afford to purchase or even rent an instrument to play. We need your help to keep our instruments in playing condition for us to share and spread our music in our school and community.
Each instrument has specific requirements such as reeds, valve oil, cork grease, and slide oil that are all perishable goods. We are running out of these materials at a growing rate and our music budget has been eliminated this year. There was a small band budget that has already been depleted to provide students with their band books.
A clarinet will not make any noise without a reed; and I have 5 reeds left for 7 different students for the entire year. A trumpets valves will not move up and down with out valve oil. A flute head-joint can not be tuned without a specific marked cleaning rod. A saxophone mouth piece can be easily chipped or completely broken without a cap to protect it. These materials are needed to play their instruments.
Each year we play for our community during the holiday season. We also showcase our talents and share them with younger students in our school. The kindergartners still tell me about the time their book buddies played a special concert with instruments for them; even though they know I was right there in the same room. We also collaborate with 3 other schools for a spring concert.
Please help us continue to share our music with our community.
