This school-wide Carton to Garden unit will not only benefit the students of our school but the community which they live in. Students in Grade 1 will be repurposing school milk cartons and planting in them. This science unit will cover the life cycle of a sunflower culminating in a gift for a special someone for Mother's Day.
Students are not the only ones to benefit from this unit of study, the community will as well! Grade 2 and Grade 3 students will also be planting in decorated repurposed cartons and delivering these, along with singing some spring songs, to patients at a nearby rehabilitation facility to brighten their day! Students in Grade 4 will be donating their young flowering plants to the town's garden club to be used throughout town in various garden beds.
The students in Grade 5 have calculated the cubic square footage of an unused sandbox to be transformed into our school vegetable garden. Students in grades 5-8 will be starting vegetables from seeds in repurposed milk cartons, transplanting, and caring for them.
The lab experiment kit will be utilized by our older students to test, monitor, and regulate the soil! Good soil should guarantee a good harvest to be donated to the local food pantry! This math and science garden project will truly bring so much to our community!
