One thing my students really struggle with is their ability to remain engaged and focused. The bar is being set higher and higher and what is expected of students at a younger age is increasing. I believe this is where providing students with the opportunity for alternate seating -- the stability balls-- enable them to be more engaged in what we are doing in class. While there will be a "getting used to using them" period, it has been proven that when stability balls are used in the classroom student engagement as well as excitement for learning has increased dramatically. When students are sitting on a stability ball their brains are stimulated to help them remain balanced and centered. Seeing that their brain is more stimulated, it is more focused on learning. I am beginning to see more and more students with attention issues. Fidgeting can help those students get out excess energy while providing them the opportunity for a little bit of movement on their stability ball while still remaining actively involved in the classroom. I believe with these stability balls available in my classroom that my students' engagement, grades, and overall interest in school will continue to improve.
