Not too many people will invest in a project or business that has no positive data. I want to give these young scholars an opportunity to prove to their community that they are not only capable but EXCEPTIONAL MUSICIANS. Before we ask/fundraise the thousands of dollars it would take to put each one of these young scholars on marching drums we would like to prove they can master the skills necessary to play them.
Learning to play music is an invaluable skill and playing music is an amazing coping skill. Drum Therapy has proven to be an effective tool for self-healing and self expression. I feel as if my students could train themselves to self regulate. My goal is to progress to the point where my students can walk into a Multi-Sensory De-Escalation Room with a drum and play for a few minutes so that can calm down and return to class ready and focused to move on with they're instruction.
Our students would greatly benefit from drums specifically because it is a huge part of their culture. Gogo Music of the new age and that of Chuck Brown's era is ever present in their day to day lives and it highlights primarily highlights percussion with drum sets, cowbells, congos, and other various percussion instruments. Bands are also very present and influential from Ballou high school's Marching band giving them closer goals to aspire to all the way up to the illustrious Howard University "Showtime" Marching Band giving them collegiate dreams. Teaching these young musicians the basics of music and percussion will open them up to a world of opportunities and it could all start with this small step. So please allow me to open doors for my students with small donations, used percussion equipment, and your support.
