It is very difficult for a kindergartner to sit in one chair or on a spot on the floor for a long period of time, especially when direct or explicit instruction is occurring in small group settings. I am a first-year inclusion teacher with about 50 percent of my students having an IEP. My goal is to make coming to small groups a place where wiggling is tolerated and learning occurs. While students in the small groups get a chance to wiggle and learn my other students will have an opportunity to sit comfortably around the room in stadium seat chairs while reading to a stuffy or working on their Chromebooks. Soft seat cushions will allow them comfort while learning the foundations of their educational career. I'm also encouraging hands-on STEM activities. The magnetic tiles are a way for our minds and hands to create, experiment and build structures based around lesson guidelines and their imaginations.
