Students choose the type of dance and the music for their performance. They take charge of their learning and engage in the movement that attracts them. During rehearsals early in the school year, they select the type of dance that sparks their interest. Currently, my students can choose between Zumba/Latino (salsa, bachata) or Afrobeats/African (traditional, modern). Making sure students who are interested in and show an aptitude for dance, get to learn a dance that captures their attention for our production is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed a tremendous difference in my students' behavior, retention of dance vocabulary and diligence when they choose the type of music and type of dance. They almost always make good choices to focus during rehearsals, do their best every session and take care of the project materials. We get a better outcome than when the dance is assigned without assessing their interest. My students are noticeably more engaged in choreography, rehearsing the movements and embellishing the steps instead of disruptive interactions with their peers, when they are given a choice of which dance they will do for the show. The boots that I have selected will help my students by giving them the materials needed to produce the rhythmic boot stomping sound for our dance performance. It's the South African Gumboot Dance! It will be extremely beneficial for the students who have chosen this particular dance to perform. I have seen how having a choice positively affects my students' effort and demeanor. Having chosen it, they will work hard to fulfill their vision for their performance.
