Window books in the classroom creates readers. And window books are ones that allow the reader to relate to them. In a low socioeconomic district, this is extremely important, because if the student cannot access their prior knowledge by relating to the text, it makes it more difficult for them to begin practicing analysis, argument, and persuasion; which are all objectives for this particular grade level. We currently have 5 books in our class room library, and they are all books that have been divulged by these now avid readers. I believe that sustained silent reading is important to the development of the reading skill, and I wish to implement this in the next year. With your help, my students will have the opportunity to excel at reading before they advance to the critical grades of 11th and beyond.
