My students need books that are entertaining and engaging at the level they can read independently. They like to share the experience of reading with a small group of their classmates. They enjoy discussion of shared interests when the books are current and valid to their life experiences. We are looking for books that are not antiquated. I have several students this year who are just on the verge of jumping from the " reading is a chore" attitude to the "I hope teacher doesn't see me reading my book while she's talking" phase. They are enjoying Alvin Ho and the 3rd Grade Detectives. Many of them think they have arrived when I hand them the first Alvin Ho book. I am hoping to catch more of my students hiding their books from me because they just can't bear to stop reading them.
