My students are very easily distracted and disrupted by many things-noises, changes in routine, waiting for the next activity. They need more items to help calm their bodies and make them available for learning.
As an occupational therapist I help try to fill in the gaps when students are not participating in classroom routines to the best of their abilities. Sometimes this is because they are just not able to calm themselves down to learn or after something upsets them. They often need the help of something comforting that provides some weight to help ground them or an alternative seat that allows them to move more while they work to keep their minds focused. Their teachers have found weighted blankets, lap pads and chairs that allow the students to move very helpful. One student may need a quiet moment away from the others with a weighted blanket to calm down. Another student may be very interested in what the teacher has on the board, but simply can't sit still.
The classroom has a few items to help, but not enough to go around. As soon as one student is given a lap pad, blanket or fidget item, the student next to him is reaching for it! Them more opportunities to help these students find their focus the more they can show us what they know.
