This particular book, Surviving the Angel of Death, was written by a Holocaust survivor who currently lives relatively near our school. This book presents an opportunity for students to have an authentic and genuine connection with historical events as the author is a member of their community. Students will read the book together as a class to learn not only about the events of the Holocaust, but also about the causes of World War II and the impact the war had on the world. The author of the book also created a Holocaust museum, the only one of it's kind in our state. Students in my class can read the book in class, and then visit the museum to be able to connect the past with the present. After reading the survivor's story, they can actually see her personal items and memorabilia from the Holocaust, and possibly even have a chance to meet her in person.
