My classroom is a quaint portable on the outside, but inside it is a sanctuary for creating life-long readers. My students are 3rd graders who are preparing to take the FSA, but most are not yet reading at grade-level. Third grade is a mandatory retention year which means, if they do not pass the standardized test, they will not be promoted to the fourth grade. For my students, this could be detrimental to their self-esteem and cause them to slip even further behind. Our goal is for every student to get promoted to fourth grade, and to read at grade-level because data shows a student who can't read on grade level by 3rd grade is four times less likely to graduate by age 19 than his/her proficiently reading counterpart.
