I love teaching music and art, “MusArt.” My students produce visual masterpieces, sing, chant, dance, and play instruments all in one room! I spend lots of time thinking about how to configure the space. Expensive barred instruments like xylophones and metallophones need to be far from painting tables, and I need room for creative and folk dance. My school building has acquired a marvelous collection of pitched percussion instruments, but the size of my classroom has not grown. Recently, a young dancer almost fell into the bench that holds several xylophones. The near accident endangered her and our instruments. Barred instruments on trolleys will give my students more space to improvise, create and express themselves in our fine arts classroom safely. Carts will allow for flexible grouping during music activities. Mobile instruments will enable adjacent students to play the same part, or move into a mixed ensemble adding drums and miscellaneous unpitched percussion. If children want to explore music in small groups, it will be easy to accommodate their request. The instruments can be wheeled into the center of the room or off to the side depending on the plan for the day; they will get more use if it is easy to move them into and out of central classroom space. I hope that someday when students ask, “Can we try this on the instruments?” I can reply, “Absolutely, let’s wheel them out and make some music!”
