Virtual morning meetings will feel different for my first grade students this year, but they don't have to look different. Morning meetings and small group break out sessions will be far more beneficial if students are given the opportunity to participate in a few traditional classroom routines. Gathering on the carpet to discuss our morning message and skills of the day can still be feasible and fun in the virtual classroom, using traditional teaching tools. Setting up our classroom in a way that is inviting to my students through a computer screen will be tricky. However, with the help of a smaller, magnetic, and movable whiteboard/flip chart, I can give my students the feel of being right inside our classroom.
