I teach two language arts/social studies classes in an upper elementary school (4-6) that was recently formed combining 5 different schools. My classes are two out of 18 4th grade classes in a low income area that will be able to use these magazines. Our transitory rate is high as students often must move as parents look for work. We are located in the deep south in Mississippi. Our students are impressionable and falling prey to the gaming industry. I have always tried to fill my classroom with books of all levels and interests, while some classrooms are sorely lacking in reading materials. Our students need more. Our students need to read about issues that are important to them now, that they can relate to, that will inspire them to connect with the world around them. Graphically interesting, full-color magazines will meet the need to catch their attention. Our community is small and having current even magazines with quality literature will open their view of the world.
