The bean bags, pillows, and alternative seating prepare my students to sit quietly and listen or complete independent work. These materials will not directly teach my students new skills, but they will help my students to refocus in order to participate in lessons. While I am teaching, one of my students may be processing a past trauma or mental health issue and will need some space to calm down in a safe area. If I have pillows, bean bags, or alternative seating, I can have my aide work with student who is acting out in a safe space while I continue teaching. Once he or she is given this opportunity to process in a safe space, he or she will return to the group or independent work area and be able to sit and focus to learn or demonstrate a specific skill. The donations for this project will improve my classroom by reducing the amount of behavioral issues because I will be able to provide the appropriate calming space that my students need in order to process their big emotions and return to learning. With fewer behavioral issues, we can increase our learning and time on task. I'm looking forward to seeing my students happier and ready to learn.
