My students are diagnosed with various disabilities from autism to down syndrome, from chromosomal disorders to legal blindness. They each bring individual strengths and challenges. My students are ages 10-14 and are reading between a grade 1 and grade 3 reading level. My students love to read, but struggle to decode and comprehend text-only novels. Although my school houses a lot of novels, most are text-only novels. Text-only novels are not attractive to my students. graphic novels are highly attractive to my students. graphic novels aid in my students' reading comprehension. Graphic novels foster a love of reading and increase my students' independence levels when reading.
