Across both the 7th and 8th grade math classes, the teachers have noticed that many of our students are struggling with their foundational computation skills, such as integer operations, fraction operations, and order of operations. It would be difficult for students to advance at grade level in math if they are lacking these skills because students are expected to be able to do these computations when coming into their respective grade levels. For example, integer operations in not part of the 8th grade math curriculum but students need to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers if they are to be able to solve equations or find the slope of a line. The best way for students to improve these skills in mathematics is to provide them with the time and means to practice. With the use of the Kindle Fires, I will be able to create "quizzes" using Google forms for students to take quickly during class on a regular basis. Instead of having to make copies of the worksheets for each student every time, students will be able to complete and submit their assignment digitally. Also, students will receive immediate feedback once they submit the assignment. Students will feel more accountable for improving their computational skills because they are being assessed on a regular basis on these specific skills and not just as it arises. This is an efficient system for students to practice and improve their computational skills given the time constraints of a 50 minute period in addition to the grade level standards that need to be addressed.
