I teach a student population of 100% Black students. Out of the four books that my school offers for the 10th grade English curriculum, NONE of the books are written by a Black American author. I asked my students at the beginning of the year what they wanted from English class this year, and one of my students wrote that he wanted to read about Black experiences. Coates' book talks about his experiences as a Black man living in Baltimore and going to college at Howard University. Not only does this give my students a glimpse into a successful writer's life, but it allows them to reflect on their own lives and upbringings and think about where they want to take their lives. With this book, I plan to center my unit on social inquiry and self-discovery. I plan to use my students' background knowledge on Baltimore to drive their understanding of this novel and unit.
