Establishing an environment where ALL students feel encouraged and allowed to fail, is essential to having a successful school year. It is my desire to provide empathy lessons in the first few weeks of school through the use of the requested books such as: Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun, The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes, The Dot, etc. Classrooms are becoming more and more diverse. Due to this, it is important to teach students to accept one another, differences included. Learning about how to not only accept each other the way we are, but even learning how to work with each other through those differences, will allow my students to not only have a successful 4th grade year, but to hopefully take those skills with them throughout their lives. Another important lesson I desire to teach my student is that of having a growth mindset. As a part of these lessons, students will also learn to allow themselves to fail, YET to keep pursuing excellence. Studies show that when students are in an environment where they are accepted and are allowed to fail, they will thrive far better than students who do not learn these important life skills. Having a growth mindset teaches students about the power of positive talk, how making mistakes allows your brain to grow, and the importance of never giving up on yourself or your classmates.
