We Want to Grow and Stay in the Know! As a teacher of English Learners (ELs), my goal is to help my students become proficient in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English. Many ELs are reluctant readers which makes this task quite challenging. Because English is their second language, some find reading to be difficult and overwhelming. My students enjoy weekly magazines because the content is relevant and relatable. The stories ignite conversations and introduce new vocabulary words that they may not have encountered with fictional texts. These discussions spark curiosity which leads to more research and standards-based learning. I’m always searching for new material that relates to today’s current events. Non-fiction books and magazines are great resources for encouraging reading and improving literacy skills.
