This year I want to share the amazing feeling of making something grow with my students. These materials will allow me to share this learning opportunity with my entire grade level using standards based materials.
We have no science materials-we don't even have a text book that covers NGSS! I requested two school garden books to share with my grade level, so that we may plan out a feasible plan this year. I also requested seed, gardening tools, a vegetable garden kit, and a flower garden kit. These will help me include NGSS standards. I also need these sets to help me plan out how and when to plant. I requested dirt, and planting materials to add to our garden beds when planting. I am hoping to show the difference while learning about what living things need to survive. I requested two soil thermometers. We will learn to use them and include math standards for measurement and problem solving. These will allow me to conduct an experiment to see if soil temperature changes growth rate. While we are growing things out side I think it is important to see how they are growing. That is why I requested the root view planter for inside the classroom.
We did not have butterflies last year, and it was very sad doing life cycles on paper plates when so many of my students can't go outside and search for real butterflies. I requested two butterfly pavilions for us to share amongst 4 classes. We will combine classes for research and discovery of the life cycle.
These materials will allow them to be scientists and explore new ideas. They could come up with, or discover, something new! Isn't that what education of our next generation is really about?
