Last year, I surveyed my sixth graders on their reading habits in order to understand how to help them better. When a student approached me about the first question (How often do you finish a book?) and suggested that I add the response choice of "never", I knew I had to do something. In short, I am staging a reading revolution. This generation is unlike many of years past, and while students may "look" like they are reading, engagement is a daily battle. And yes, I do firmly believe the key to a better future is through reading- no matter what path you choose. To continue to ignore the lack of reading engagement is a complete disservice to all students. And after all they have been through, they deserve better. They deserve more. And I know, together, we can do this. My favorite response to when students declare reading is boring is to suggest that they have not found the right book. Your generosity donating to this project could help me put fabulous, engaging books into the hands of hundreds of sixth graders over the next several years, and ultimately, change them forever. I will bring the enthusiasm and the lessons to help support them, if you would kindly help me bring these books into my classroom. These books will be used for many years in book clubs that will drive reading, discussions, and rigorous analytical writing.
