The Giver is a classic novel that will enhance my students' reading and writing skills. We will use the book to master vocabulary and comprehension. We will use it to discuss plot, theme, figurative language, setting and character development. The Giver lends itself to rich classroom discussions on many important topics. It is my hope to build a love of reading and teach empathy through this novel study and the many topics it discusses. "How important is reading fiction in socializing school children? Researchers at The New School in New York City have found evidence that literary fiction improves a reader’s capacity to understand what others are thinking and feeling."- Scientific American
