At the end of quarter 2, we will begin reading the novel "Hoot" by Carl Hiaassen. Students will be required to complete assignments related to the book home to work on or finish at home. This becomes problematic for students who struggle with reading comprehension issues, or for students who have after school activities and need to complete their work later in the evening, as the material they read in class is not longer fresh in their memories. Being able to check out individual copies of the novel to take home enables students the opportunity to go back and reread sections, study the vocabulary in context, and connect with the text. In some cases, students will purchase their own copy of the novel; however, having enough novels for every student allows equal access. My students sit in groups of four, as it allows them easy access to each other whether they are working on easy fluency problems or complex math questions. Unfortunately, this group set up has to change whenever we have tests. We have to change the seat arrangements to rows and columns, and it easily gets pretty hectic as we try to rearrange the classroom for the tests. Having the privacy boards will allow the class to maximize the class time especially on the day of the test. It will provide the privacy students need as they take the test without having to rearrange the entire classroom.
