I teach special education students. These students miss significant amounts of opportunities to read when they can't focus on the lesson. In comes the perfect tool to help them focus! A foam balance pad, a rocker board and a round balance board from which to choose. These unfocused students will be balancing their way to a successful reading day. They'll balance and wiggle while listening to others read. We know that keeping these students from eloping our classroom is the first step in getting them engaged in the reading lesson. They'll have fun and not even know that they're learning along side their peers. We know they are quick learners if we can keep them focused and busy. This project has been a passion of mine for the last couple of years. I think back to my elementary days and would have loved an opportunity to wiggle while I learned. That's why I have such compassion for what an ADHD brain goes through as it tries to focus on what the teacher is saying. I imagine they step onto the board and all of a sudden they can hear the lesson, they can concentrate on what another student is saying, they hear the story being read and they blurt out their ideas with confidence and robust. And although we'd all like our students to share in appropriate ways we're just so darn happy they are plugged in!
