Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, is a heart-warming book about a 5th-grade student who enters public education for the first time and has to face certain challenges that come along with it. It is imperative to teach students the importance of compassion and kindness due to the lasting impact it has on every student's life. As the characters of the book reveal, kindness is the key to making and retaining valuable friendships, even if someone is different than the others. My hope is that my students will learn the importance of kindness through the character's experiences in Wonder while engaged in a novel study that incorporates Common Core ELA standards.
