I have the honor of teaching a Reading and Writing course. This course does not have a set curriculum to follow. Therefore, I want to be responsive to the students when choosing what to teach. Students, like adults, love to read texts that are raw and rare. In Black Boy by Richard Wright, he is a child battling alcoholism. I know that is a story that will keep the students turning the pages because I have witnessed my students choosing novels from my classroom library pertaining to the same subjects and themes that Wright highlights. This text will be used as a mentor text. I will teach students how to identify themes, how to discuss plot points, and how to analyze a character's point of view and change. They will then read their own novel and complete the same activity with their own novels. Thank you for all donations large and small.
