In this new era of learning, students are not conformed with teacher instruction. This school year, students will learn math through a different approach, CGI (Cognitively Guided Approach). CGI is a student-centered approach to teaching math, rather than a math curriculum. It is listening to students, asking questions and engage their thinking with the purpose of expanding their mathematical understanding. Students' ability to do math has reached new levels, and through CGI resources students will become great problem solvers. The purpose of this project is to re-organize the math center. With the shelf organizer, students will be able to see all manipulatives available. The organizer containers will help me color code the counting collections by quantity. Students will be able to visually see options. The Rekenrek set would help my students develop number sense and it would be a great addition to use during CGI. This learning tool consists of rows of ten plastic beads each, and it would assist in understanding of the fives and tens structure of numbers. The individual number lines would be an additional learning tool that could help promote mental math.
