Flexible seating, also known as “The Starbucks Classroom,” is the latest innovation in student-centered classrooms. In essence, this type of classroom removes the typical seating in plastic chairs and desks and gives students the freedom to choose seating options that have been shown to improve learning, increase focus, and reduce unwanted student behaviors. Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and helps them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. Studies have shown that evolving a classroom space that meets the needs of the student’s individual needs impacts how they learn and interact in the classroom experience.
