My students are all intellectually gifted, from grades 3-8. However the gap is wide at Leflore County High School in Itta Bena, Mississippi. Our graduation rate is one of the lowest in the state, and the average 10th grader reads on a 4th grade level. My students have a chance of breaking their cycle of poverty, but they are rarely given the resources or attention necessary to do so. My students are given a label as gifted or as the smart kids, but that is often times all they are given, a label. My students all have big goals, and I do what I can to get them there, but there is only so much that can be done without proper resources. Many of them want to go into careers that will help out other people, and I want to see that that can happen.
