Recently, one of my students with a visusl impairment politely asked our school librarian to help him find a book. It's not often he is brave enough to speak to new people, but he wanted a book about Somalia. (He even keeps a little flag of Somalia in his English folder!). The librarian told him we had none! My poor student left dejected and without a book. This student is part of my ESL Language Arts class. My students are not only new to middle school, but many are new to the country! With all the obstacles they are up against, I am impressed at their want to learn and experience new things. Therefore, I would like my Somali, Hispanic, and Hmong students to see themselves represented in the books they are reading. They have a right and a need to read diverse books. They need to know that they matter. What a meaningful way to get them even more excited about reading and writing!
