Our school serves a 91% Latino student population and is nestled in one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse neighborhoods in New York City. Most of our students had never envisioned college for themselves and on the first day of school many students could not define the very idea of "college." That's where we come in! To build the skills and mindsets of our niños for success later in life, we are modeling, teaching, and fostering a deep love of reading. Every student has a goal of reading 1,000,000 words by the end of the year. Some kids have nearly surpassed this goal already, in just a few months. Others have a ways to go. When learning to love reading, the books selected by our students are the ones with which they can make personal connections. Currently, our classroom libraries are lacking texts written by Latino authors, speaking to Latino experiences in Central and South America and in the United States. It is my hope that with a renewed library that includes books mostly about their own lives, cultures, and languages, we can pave the road to 1,000,000 words even faster for our students. With your donation, we can deliver over 50 culturally relevant texts to the hands of our students!
